How long is the general service life of flame-retardant PPE?
2025-12-18

Flame-retardant protective clothing

The lifespan of this type of PPE is strongly related to the fabric material. Under regular use and standardized maintenance, the lifespan range of different materials is clear: pure cotton protective clothing treated with flame-retardant agents has a shorter lifespan of about 12 to 16 months due to the easy loss of flame-retardant components after multiple washes. The flame-retardant cotton-nylon blended suit with an 88/12 ratio has slightly better overall performance and a lifespan of 18 to 30 months. Blended protective clothing made of inherent flame-retardant fibers such as Nomex® (Nomex®) has long-lasting flame-retardant performance and is wear-resistant, with a service life of up to 2.5 to 4 years. If it is in a harsh environment with high temperature and high corrosion, such as metallurgy and chemical industry, and is used frequently, its service life may be shortened by 30% to 50%.

Flame-retardant protective gloves

As easily worn protective equipment, its lifespan is usually shorter than that of protective clothing. Professional flame-retardant and heat-insulating gloves made of aramid material can still maintain basic flame-retardant performance after 50 washes. However, due to the fact that key parts such as the palm often have to bear external forces like friction and grip, their service life in daily high-frequency operation scenarios is mostly 3 to 12 months. If the gloves are used in scenarios with strong wear and high temperatures such as welding and handling of molten metals, they may need to be replaced after 1 to 3 months due to local damage and aging of the insulation layer. However, simple types such as ordinary flame-retardant cotton gloves have a shorter lifespan, mostly for one-time use or within a few weeks.
